Sri Venkateswara College
The institution soon outgrew its regional character and has now become one of the most sought after co-educational colleges of India.
In 2004, Sri Venkateswara College was recognized by the University Grants Commission(UGC) as the "College with Potential for Excellence"[citation needed]. Only 47 colleges in the country and two in Delhi University have been identified by UGC for this award.
In the year 2005, UGC and NASSCOM jointly identified the College as one of the four pilot centers to set-up Techno Business Skill Development (TSD) projects in the country. This selection was based on the inputs from the Industry representatives and several other factors including comfort level of the IT industry partners. The College has already taken initiatives to identify the areas of collaboration between the Industry and the College.
Originally, the objective of the college was to cater to the educational needs of the students from South India but the college soon shed its regional character and has now become one of the most sought after co-educational colleges in the capital.
The college presently boasts of about 2200 students and 231 staff members. In terms of infrastructure the college library contains over 75,000 books while the canteen of the college is famous for its dosas, idlis and vadas and has probably got the most hip crowd in the entire South Campus. Besides the annual college magazine there are nine different wall magazines which carry articles, paintings, photographs, cartoons etc. and provide an excellent opportunity to students to develop their academic and artistic skills.
The College offers Honours as well as Pass courses in Commerce, Science and Arts streams. Admissions are strictly on the basis of marks secured in the Senior Secondary High School examination as the college declares a cut-off list for admission to various undergraduate courses every year. The application forms for admissions to the current year are available at the moment and the last date for submissions is 15th June . Seats are also reserved for the Sports quota and for children of armed forces. There is also a reservation in some courses for students who have studies Tamil/Telugu/Sanskrit at the 10th and 12th level.
